US will not back away from Internet freedom push - 26th January 2010

WASHINGTON — The United States said Monday it will not back away from an Internet freedom push that has raised hackles in China amid a dispute between Beijing and Web giant Google over cyberattacks.

"We are aware that China has a different position with respect to restricting information," State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said.

"We think this is inconsistent with the information environment and prerequisites of the 21st century," Crowley told reporters.

"So we will continue to promote the free flow of information, unfettered access to information, the ability to have virtual freedom of association.

"These are all, we believe, fundamental tenets of the environment that we live in, and we will not back away from advocating that this should be something that all countries should promote," Crowley said.

The spokesman also recalled that US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a major policy speech on Internet freedom last week in which she talked about "being able to surf the Internet without restrictions."

Beijing lashed out at Clinton's speech last week, saying it was "harmful" to relations, and a Chinese spokesman on Monday denied any state involvement in the cyberattacks which Google said originated in China.

The Internet giant has said that following the cyberattacks on the email accounts of Chinese human rights activists it is no longer willing to censor Web search results in China even it that means it has to leave the country.

A spokesman for China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said Monday that the "accusation that the Chinese government participated in (any) cyberattack, either in an explicit or inexplicit way, is groundless and aims to denigrate China."

"China's policy on Internet safety is transparent and consistent," the spokesman told state news agency Xinhua, saying the country with the world's largest online community was itself the "biggest victim" of hacking.

The White House said last week that President Barack Obama was "troubled" by the Chinese-based cyberattacks on Google and other US companies and was seeking official answers.

The Google row, which erupted almost two weeks ago, has threatened to damage Sino-US ties, which are already dogged by trade and currency issues, US arms sales to Taiwan and climate change.

Greens join net blackout protest - 25th January 2010

The Australian Greens will join more than 500 other websites in fading their webpage to black in protest against the federal government's proposed internet filter.

The government's plan will not protect children, will do nothing to crack down on criminal activity online, and sets a dangerous precedent of centralised net censorship, Greens communications spokesman Scott Ludlum said in a statement on Monday.

"Communications Minister Stephen Conroy should start paying attention to the almost universal condemnation of this scheme and pursue alternatives rather than pushing ahead with the mandatory filter," Senator Ludlum said.

A website, www.internetblackout.com.au, has been specially set up for the week-long event, dubbed The Great Australian Internet Blackout.

Tomb Raider is record breaker

Pixel princess Lara Croft has clocked up six world records.

The all-action archaeologist and star of the Tomb Raider series beat her rivals Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog for the highest number of entries in the Guinness World Records 2010 Gamer's Edition, including most successful video game heroine.

Croft also scooped awards for the most recognisable female in a video game; most detailed game character; most real-life stand-ins; highest grossing game spin-off and most successful live-action transfer.

Actress Angelina Jolie is best-known as the face of the English heroine, but Croft has also been officially portrayed by five other models including Nell McAndrew, Rhona Mitra and currently by UK gymnast Alison Carroll - giving her the record for the most real-life stand-ins.

Gung-ho Croft - famous for her skin-tight khaki shorts, low-cut vest top and ponytail - became an unlikely sex symbol when she first appeared on the PlayStation in 1996.
With 32,816 rendered polygons forming her figure in Tomb Raider: Underworld, she is the most detailed video game character ever created.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider already ranks as the highest-grossing video-game movie but together with its sequel, The Cradle of Life, the franchise has grossed in excess of £216 million, making it the most successful live-action transfer of all time.

Guinness World Records' gaming editor Gaz Deaves said: "Lara Croft epitomises all that's great about video gaming and we're delighted to acknowledge her success by awarding her with six new official record entries including making her the most-famous and most-successful female video game character in the world."

PartyGaming's PartyPartners To Attend London Affiliate Conference (LAC); PartyGaming and industry interest in 'Casino Jack' documentary

PartyGaming's PartyPartners To Attend London Affiliate Conference (LAC); PartyGaming and industry interest in 'Casino Jack' documentary, by Greg Tingle - 20th January 2010

The world's leading listed igaming company, PartyGaming, will have numerous staff and management attending the annual London Affiliate Conference (LAC) that kicks off on the 28th of this month, and runs to the 31st.

The famous Old Billingsgate Market is the venue for the event which expects thousands of people to attend over the 4 day igaming fest.

Industry buzz predicts that PartyGaming, PartyCasino.com, PartyPoker.com and Club World Poker Tour are all strong chances to pick up an iGB Affiliate Award or three.

PartyPartners is the LAC's Platinum sponsor, however it needs to be noted that the event has in the region of 80 sponsors, so nothing untoward is expected and it should be a clean "fight".

The event is one of the world's best opportunities to network with the leading people and companies in the gaming and igaming industry.

Some of the topics expected to be hot include "what's next", standing out from the pack, game innovation and "Avatar" type technology, potential return to the U.S. market, expansion into new frontiers, like Australia, and a bit of gossip as to what to expect in upcoming award winning documentary, "Casino Jack".

Representatives and insiders from the world's 4 continents will be attending, and Media Man looks forward to breaking news via the Asia Pacific - Australian connection.

The smart money says PartyGaming to pick up at least a couple of awards, not a virgin in the slightest to bragging rights, and don't be surprised to see a new game or two launched.

It's going to be a heck of a party at London's Old Billingsgate, and you can bet Media Man and Casino News Media will have a massive scoop. Stay tuned.

Online Poker Sites Rally for Haiti Earthquake Victims, by Dan Cypra - 14th January 2010

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked the tiny nation of Haiti left the country in shambles and perhaps as many as 50,000 people may have perished. In response, the online poker world has come together to raise money for the natural disaster’s victims.

Full Tilt Poker has launched “Aid for Haiti” tournaments in which the site will match the rake paid and then donate it to several charities on the ground in the island nation. For Full Tilt Poker members who don’t want to hit the virtual felts in order to donate, the world’s second largest online poker site has set up “Aid for Haiti No Play” tournaments. Ten of these events are scheduled for Sunday, January 17th and Full Tilt is matching the buy-ins. No poker will actually be had in “No-Play” tournaments.

The site has also created a special user account dubbed “Aid for Haiti.” In a similar fashion as transferring funds from one player to another, those who wish to help can send money directly to the account in $5 increments or larger. Full Tilt will then match the funds raised.

PokerStars has taken a streamlined approach to fundraising. The site has selected the Red Cross as its beneficiary and, like Full Tilt Poker and others involved, is matching donations dollar for dollar. The opportunity to donate will be open through January 31st and all players need to do is open up the PokerStars client, go to “Tourney” and “Special,” and enter one of the Haiti Earthquake Relief events. None of these tournaments will actually play out. Instead, the $1 to $1,000 buy-in allows players to donate directly to the Red Cross. PokerStars members can also ship money to “Haiti Fund,” a player account set up specifically to accept donations. Go to “Requests” and “Transfer Funds” in the top menu to take advantage of this method.

Meanwhile, the Calvin Ayre Foundation, named for the founder of Bodog, has pledged £10,000 to the U.K.-based foundation Oxfam to support the cause. The internet mogul added, “I also want to challenge the rest of this industry to also contribute to Oxfam to help out in Haiti and my private foundation will match any proven payment to Oxfam by an online gaming person up to $1,000,000.” Bodog, PokerStars, and Full Tilt Poker all accept players and donations from the United States. The latter two are the largest and second largest sites in the world, respectively.

Also accepting U.S. action and promoting relief to the residents of Haiti is Cake Poker. The room has set up three special “holding tanks” totaling $5, $25, and $100. Players can register for each of them and the site, which features Lee Jones as its Card Room Manager, will match all funds raised. No cards will be dealt in these tournaments; instead, they are purely for donation purposes. The trio of “holding tanks” will be available until Midnight ET on January 31st.

Facebook poker application Zynga is donating $1 to Fonkoze, “an organization that supports families in Haiti,” for every chip package sold. Other added benefits, including a “Hearts for Haiti” gift, will be thrown into the mix.

On PocketFives.com, top-ranked online poker player David “Doc Sands” Sands announced that he was donating 10% of his Sunday profits up to $10,000 to a “disaster relief fund.” Sands called on other all-star players to do the same, with Ryan “gutshtallin” Welch, who sits at #39 in the world, agreeing to similar terms. Sunday features some of the largest online poker tournaments in the industry, including the Sunday Million on PokerStars and $750,000 Guaranteed on Full Tilt Poker.

The United States pledged $100 million in aid for Haiti. Hopefully, the online poker community can band together for this worthwhile cause.

Google: A New Approach To China - Statement from Google - 12th January 2010

Like many other well-known organizations, we face cyber attacks of varying degrees on a regular basis. In mid-December, we detected a highly sophisticated and targeted attack on our corporate infrastructure originating from China that resulted in the theft of intellectual property from Google. However, it soon became clear that what at first appeared to be solely a security incident--albeit a significant one--was something quite different.

First, this attack was not just on Google. As part of our investigation we have discovered that at least twenty other large companies from a wide range of businesses--including the Internet, finance, technology, media and chemical sectors--have been similarly targeted. We are currently in the process of notifying those companies, and we are also working with the relevant U.S. authorities.

Second, we have evidence to suggest that a primary goal of the attackers was accessing the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. Based on our investigation to date we believe their attack did not achieve that objective. Only two Gmail accounts appear to have been accessed, and that activity was limited to account information (such as the date the account was created) and subject line, rather than the content of emails themselves.

Third, as part of this investigation but independent of the attack on Google, we have discovered that the accounts of dozens of U.S.-, China- and Europe-based Gmail users who are advocates of human rights in China appear to have been routinely accessed by third parties. These accounts have not been accessed through any security breach at Google, but most likely via phishing scams or malware placed on the users' computers.

We have already used information gained from this attack to make infrastructure and architectural improvements that enhance security for Google and for our users. In terms of individual users, we would advise people to deploy reputable anti-virus and anti-spyware programs on their computers, to install patches for their operating systems and to update their web browsers. Always be cautious when clicking on links appearing in instant messages and emails, or when asked to share personal information like passwords online. You can read more here about our cyber-security recommendations. People wanting to learn more about these kinds of attacks can read this U.S. government report (PDF), Nart Villeneuve's blog and this presentation on the GhostNet spying incident.

We have taken the unusual step of sharing information about these attacks with a broad audience not just because of the security and human rights implications of what we have unearthed, but also because this information goes to the heart of a much bigger global debate about freedom of speech. In the last two decades, China's economic reform programs and its citizens' entrepreneurial flair have lifted hundreds of millions of Chinese people out of poverty. Indeed, this great nation is at the heart of much economic progress and development in the world today.

We launched Google.cn in January 2006 in the belief that the benefits of increased access to information for people in China and a more open Internet outweighed our discomfort in agreeing to censor some results. At the time we made clear that "we will carefully monitor conditions in China, including new laws and other restrictions on our services. If we determine that we are unable to achieve the objectives outlined we will not hesitate to reconsider our approach to China."

These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered--combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web--have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China. We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China.

The decision to review our business operations in China has been incredibly hard, and we know that it will have potentially far-reaching consequences. We want to make clear that this move was driven by our executives in the United States, without the knowledge or involvement of our employees in China who have worked incredibly hard to make Google.cn the success it is today. We are committed to working responsibly to resolve the very difficult issues raised.

Media Man guide to getting found on the web, by Greg Tingle

Having run a media, publicity and internet portal development company for a decade, I'm told I know a thing or two about being found on the internet.

One of our company websites has been ranked in the Hitwise Australia top ten (entertainment category) for 6 years in a row.

Here's a list of elements to take into consideration when it comes to getting your website or websites, found on the internet.

Be it a media company, games portal, casino, property and investment, travel and tourism, celebrity and entertainment, adult, social and community or something else, you can't go past these tips:

Search Engines - you really need to be in Google, Yahoo! and Bing. If you are not in there, fix that. If you have problems get a SEO expert to assist, but ask questions and measure results.

Content - quality, unique and quantity.

Usability - a website layout that is logical and user friendly.

Media portfolio - search engines, the general public and news media like to see a media portfolio. News is one of the most popular topics on the internet.

Videos - use of video on your websites and / or plugging into YouTube.

Social media - Blogger, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn.com et al all can spike website traffic plus they all give you more exposure, thus more chance to be found in the top ten.

Multi language - English is only one of the world's languages! Google offer language translation tools, however if you invest the time the rewards may be there. This option is more relevant and effective for some products, services and markets than others.

Multi currency - if you sell something this is well worth considering. Credit cards, Moneybookers, games and casino, overseas visitors... there's many reasons to adopt this.

Syndication - have your news appear on other websites and ensure the visitor can find the source of the news.

Speed - have a fast loading website, not a slow one.

Celebrity - if possible the mention of a couple of famous celebrities can help boost the popularity of a website.

Links - links a proven way to help build website traffic and link popularity.

Research - look at other websites that are achieving top ten or first page result for example and take a closer look at the companies, they're websites.

This list does not contain every known tactic and "secret" known to mankind, however it's a practical and concise guide. Happy web surfing.

Google Alerts Study of World's Top 10 Gambling Brands

LAMBOURN, England, January 5 - Independent Gaming Consultant, Josh Apiafi, was commissioned by a client looking to invest in the gaming industry to test the brand strength of ten of the biggest names within the sector, namely; 888, bet365, Betfair, Bodog, bwin, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power, Party Poker, Pokerstars and William Hill.

Few would question the dominance of Google in search engine terms and therefore the number of Google Alerts* generated daily by each of the firms was a major indicator towards the results of the project. The data run was complied throughout the month of December 2009. The results highlighted how strongly competitive the PR arena for the major gambling companies was and also how successfully gambling companies have embraced the plethora of new media available.

Josh Apiafi, Partner of Apiafi Associates, commented: "With much talk of digital and social media as well as the investment gambling companies put into PR generally we were keen to see how well the industry was getting its message out there with impressive results."

"The method's simplicity is its trump card. Equally, the results were very consistent on a daily basis - this wasn't a case of one brand having a lot to shout about during this particular period or having one or two very strong days that skewed the data."

Full daily results are available from Apiafi Associates.

Company: Total:

1. Bodog 510
2. PokerStars 493
3. Betfair 467
4. Paddy Power 437
5. Ladbrokes 421
6. Bet365 414
7. William Hill 395
8. BWin 178
9. Party Poker 175
10. 888** 99
