Iron Man, Thor and Captain America aren't just coming to the big screen — they're also coming to the iPad courtesy of a new Marvel Comics application.
In a press release, Marvel Entertainment announced the launch of the Marvel Comics App for the iPad, which will be available to download for free on the App Store. Marvel is launching the App with over 500 comic book titles both classic and contemporary, with each digital title priced at $1.99 and new content planned every week.
Launch titles include Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's "Astonishing X-Men," Jonathan Hickman's ongoing "Fantastic Four" run and Jeph Loeb's introduction of the Red Hulk.
"We're excited to introduce an unparalleled digital comic experience to our fans with the Marvel Comics App for iPad," Marvel's Dan Buckley said in a statement. "The iPad is the first device that offers us a chance to present digital comics that are even close to replicating the experience of reading a print comic. This new world of digital comics distribution provides us great opportunities to reach new readers, allow consumers to sample our diverse stories and characters, and we believe it will drive these new fans into the App Store and local comic shops each week to find even more."
According to the press release, the Marvel Comics App was created in conjunction with digital distributor ComiXology. Readers can preview up to three pages for each available comic book before purchasing. Additionally, the Marvel Comics App includes a comic shop locator, allowing fans to track down local comic book retail outlets.
In a hands-on review of the Marvel Comics App on Boing Boing, Xeni Jardin wrote: "I like it. Scrolling is intuitive, brisk, and elegant. I'm amazed at how smooth. The store interface makes sense to anyone familiar with iTunes and App store. Flipping and reading, one luminous full-color page at a time, I do not miss paper."
Marvel's move towards the iPad comes just a few short months after the publisher started offering content on the iPhone via ComiXology, iVerse and Panelfly.
